A number of modern, multi-storey shopping malls and glitzy new shopping centres await holidaymakers visiting the city of Hiroshima. Shopping in Hiroshima has never been bigger business and a number of major Japanese department stores punctuate the city's biggest malls.

Amongst the main shopping highlights in Hiroshima, Alpark stands on the western side of the city and is home to the Tenmaya department store and a huge car park, while the Asse shopping centre features seven floors and stands within the Hiroshima Station Building.

Most shops in Hiroshima are open on a daily basis, between 10:00 and 17:00, with the larger department stores remaining open a little later. However, the smaller shops may choose to close on Sundays, and even the bigger stores have one or two seemingly random days off every month.

For a really special souvenir of your stay in Hiroshima, the Danbara Kottoukan complex contains two floors full of interesting shops and antiques stores, while the indoor Hondori Shopping Arcade is rather more upscale and modern, boasting many major department stores and a bustling atmosphere.

Rather more relaxed is the Midorii Tenmaya shopping centre on the northern side of Hiroshima. Rather like an overgrown department store, the Midorii Tenmaya complex features a host of high-street fashion and a good food court. The Pacela Centre is another great place for some leisurely shopping and incorporates a large atrium, good views of the city, a number of top restaurants and even its own radio station.

Especially popular with youths in Hiroshima is the rather strangely named Wiz Wonderland shopping mall and also the Sun Mall, where a huge selection of fashion boutiques await. Here are the best places to shop in the city.
