The city of Hiroshima has been constructed on a number of islands, within the delta of Ota-gawa. Capital of Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture and the biggest city in the whole of western Honshu, Hiroshima lies in the Chugoku area and is home to a thriving community and a number of prominent reminders of its past, when it was targeted by the first ever atomic bomb in WWII.

Hiroshima quickly recovered from this tragedy and has now become a much-visited city. Most of the main reminders of the bombing can be found on the northern side of the island, and also to the west of central Hiroshima. Peace Memorial Park stands out as a particularly important landmark and contains many memorials.

On the eastern side of the city centre you will find the JR Hiroshima Station, which is surrounded by a number of accommodation options. However, central Hiroshima tends to be more tourist friendly and features a lively entertainment district and plenty of restaurants.

The Hiroshima Prefecture faces the island of Shikoku, being separated by a stretch of the Seto Inland Sea. Much of the area is particularly mountainous and surrounded by the prefectures of Okayama, Shimane, Tottori and also Yamaguchi. Close to Hiroshima you will find the following locations.
